"Abel Minnée was born in 1988 in Amsterdam and received a BFA in photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. His work is often engaged with the medium photography itself, researching the construction of the image, the capacities of the camera and the application of the photographical image in popular visual culture with an interest for ostensibly arbitrary way subjects are chosen, stories are written and images are created. Biography
"It is what it is. Or is it more than it seems? That’s the intriguing paradox in which you become entangled when you look at the work of Abel Minnée. His photographs are clear and simple. They have the technical perfection of advertising photography but demand more of the viewer than a quick glance. The subjects seem chosen at random, but nothing about Minnée’s work is accidental or fleeting . The way his work has developed recently is fascinating. His photos seems more and more the result of performative acts. He creates a still life from the things used to clean an exhibition space, for example. He makes a photograph of it, which he then presents in that same exhibition space. These acts don’t even necessarily have to lead to a photo. From all the light sources in the studio used by him and his friends, Minnée has made an installation called Privileged instants and any-instant whatevers, an ideal synthesis of Studio Spaan & Co (Bram Spaan, Mounir Raji, Maarten van der Kamp, Abel Minnée), Daniël Goedkoopstraat 8, Amsterdam. Referring to one of the essential aspects of photography, he’s created an installation from the fridge lamp, the light in the sandwich toaster and the bulb that illuminates the studio. His interest in investigating aspects of photography, the camera, the medium – and not just by making photos – gives depth to Minnée’s artistic practice. It triggers a desire to go on following the development of his still young oeuvre closely."

Biography
"A work by Abel Minnée (NL, 1988) starts with something that he finds in daily life, which then becomes a topic to think about. First he asks himself: does it make sense to approach this thing photographically? If so, he follows the most simple and childish questions. He adopts the subject, decomposes it and deconstructs it, flattens and deepens it. It does not rarely result in capturing the "rear" of some phenomenon – the back-story – to show and let experience what often remains invisible. He shows how image is system, network, language, sign, and, above all, still: photography.
Although Abel’s photographs might seem distant and theoretical, there is always a personal aspect in his pictures. It says a lot about the artist’s work, which roots lie largely in hisimmediate vicinity, Rietveld Academie background and groups of friends. Although the typical entrepeneurial Amsterdammer – streetwise and with a lucrative network, maintaining artist collectives while dj’ing during the nights – Abel is also always craving for new content and theory; the obsessive photographer that forever continues to wonder.
This wonder goes as far as his website. It’s not just a means of communicating text and image, but a reflection on the ubiquitous medium in itself. What does it mean to be represented by a website? What is the significance of an artist’s digital alter ego? How do the words of a curator influence your practice? And what did the Internet to photography?
Curator’s suggestion: search for the rear, find Abel backstage, break the surface, and deepen the flatness."
Zippora Elders, curator Kunstfort, Vijfhuizen, The Netherlands.

Biography
"Abel Minnée was born in 1988 in Amsterdam and received a BFA in photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. His work is often engaged with the medium photography itself, researching the construction of the image, the capacities of the camera and the application of the photographical image in popular visual culture with an interest for ostensibly arbitrary way subjects are chosen, stories are written and images are created. His images are revealing and highlighting the photographical gesture in it's own and very specific way."
Ine Lamers, Head of Photography Department Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
